Must See TV...

The Academy Awards (the "Oscars") will be presented on March 5th with a performance from none other than Three 6 Mafia.
The song, called "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," is from the movie "Hustle & Flow," the story of a pimp who aspires to a singing career. In the Oscars' first performance by a rap group, the group Three 6 Mafia will perform the song, one of three nominated in the best original song category, at the March 5 Academy Awards ceremony.
I'm just looking forward to seeing how the Oscar audience will react to DJ Paul, Juicy J, and Crunchy Black. Can you picture George Clooney and Reese Witherspoon rocking to the beat of "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp"??? I can't wait...

The Oscars are trying to get ratings from African-American viewers but damn, they couldn't book Jay-Z? This is going to be a mess. I can't wait to see Today and the View on Monday!

You black people always want to be a part of something, so the Academy is just giving you all enough rope to hang yourselves. That song is an abomination to real music. I'd rather see Nelly on stage. I hope it is as embarassing as I anticipate!

First of all its AFRICAN AMERICANS dammit and secound of all where do you come from putting us down like that all of us are not the same.Just because one black person goes in a corner store and rob's it dosent give you or anyone else the right to say we are all like that talk about sterotyping.I demand for that comment to be erased and if its not then thats just flat out wrong and its really hurtful!!!!

Aiyanna...you can't argue with someone over the internet--just let them express their opinion as they have the right to do. Also--just as you said that one black person doesn't represent the whole race, I must tell you that I do NOT prefer to be called African-American. A white person from South Africa can move to the States and be an African-American so it doesn't serve to identify my racial or cultural origin. I'm not trying to start anything--just something for you to ponder...

Picking this group is just as bad as white people having us jump around back in the day of slavery. They used us then and they are using us now....

DAMN ,DAMN, DAMN!! IT'S THE NEW MILLENIUM MINSTREL SHOW JUST LIKE SPIKE TRIED TO WARN US ABOUT...I AM NOT ABOUT TO ACT LIKE THAT GARBAGE THEY ARE GOING TO PERFORM IS OF ANY RELEVANCE OUT OF SOME MISGUIDED LOYALTY TO MY ETHNICITY!! I MEAN COME ON, IT'S A SONG ABOUT A MISOGYNISTIC THUG WORRYING THAT HE MAY HAVE TO ACTUALLY GROW A "PAIR" & STOP PROFITING OFF OF THE IGNORANCE & LOW SELF ESTEEM OF WOMEN. "WHUP THAT TRICK" IS THAT WHAT PASSES FOR MUSIC THESE DAYS?? IN CASE YOUR WONDERING... I AM OF AFRO-AMERICAN & HISPANIC DESCENT & UNFORTUNATELY I AGREE WITH THE RACIST THAT THE WHITE FOLKS ARE LETTING THEM HANG THEMSELVES. THEY KNOW DAMN WELL THEY COULD'VE GOTTEN JAY-Z OR SOMEONE. I GUESS HE IS A LITTLE TOO INTELLIGENT NOW HE ACTUALLY INSPIRES US TO T-H-I-N-K!!!!

All of y'all talking about this is embarrasing, why didn't they pick another group? So this is how we're recognized? etc. really bother me. I guess it would be o.k. as long as they stick to the Soul Train & BET Awards
but now that they are getting ready to perform it in front of white folks there's a problem. There's always someone on here talking about support your own but I don't see them on here saying that about these dudes. So what if you don't like their music or what they stand for?--it represents one of the many genres of music that black folks listen to and create. Give them their props for making history and stop worrying all the time about what the white man is going to think.

And oh yeah, if Jay-Z inspires any of us to really "T-H-I-N-K" then I "T-H-I-N-K" we need to re-evaluate what "T-H-I-N-K" means because he's talking about the same shit as everybody else out there. And yes--I am a Jay-Z fan. He may flip it a little more than the basic rapper but the content is still the same.

I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT I WOULD NOT BE EMBARASSED BECAUSE SOMEWHERE LIKE THE BET AWARDS IS OUR COMFORT ZONE, AND AS BLACK PEOPLE WE CAN RELATE OR UNDERSTAND WHY THEY SING WHAT THEY SING. BUT THE ACADEMY AWARDS IS NOT OF THAT GENRE. SOME OF THE VIEWERS HAD A PROBLEM WITH BEYONCE SINGING PHANTOM OF THE OPERA SONGS, SO I AM SURE WE WILL BE MADE A MOCKERY OF ON EVERY PROGRAM THAT FOLLOWS THAT PERFORMANCE. WE ARE ALL AWARE OF HOW WE ARE BEING DISCUSSED IN WHITE HOMES AS NOTHING BUT WELFARE RECIPIENT CRACK HEAD HOES AND PIMPS, WHEN IT IS MORE OF THEM ON WELFARE, FOOD STAMPS AND METH THAN US. I, FOR ONE AM NOT ASHAMED OF THREE SIX BUT THE OSCARS ARE NOT "OUR" SHOW AND I AM AFRAID THAT THE RACIST IS RIGHT!

To addrees "Nee" This is a blog after all which means I can express whatever my feelings may be about what or whomever !!! I am not ashamed of 3-6 because that would imply that I actually care about them...I am just not into being supportive of music that makes us look like the stereotypes most caucasions believe to us to be..As for Jay-Z he may talk about the same things other rappers do but that is a smart business decision on his part he wanted to sell freakin records ...he dosen't just "flip it" different his intelligence shines through so that you know your listening to somebody that reads books & knows the is a world out there beyond getting notoriety as the local pimp in your hood..Jay-Z may rap about the things many other rappers now glorify but he is not one dimensional. He can flip to a whole nother level any time he chooses whereas in my opinion if it weren't for drugs, sex,& cars 3-6 would never have existed

1 step forwards with black ppl actually being nominated and ten steps backwards with this dumb ass performance

Anonymous

Like I said--the only problem you have is that it's being performed in front of white people. Why do you care what they think? After all the so-called positive achievements of black people the majority of them still think of you as a nigga so you need to get rid of that house slave mentality and stop trying to please massa...

Anonymous

said...

It's not about pleasing massa. You seem to be a very ignorant person. It's all about feeding into stereotypes. It's not often that we are allotted the opportunity to display our talents in front of "Massa" and when the opportunity presents itself, we choose to let him know "It's hard out there for a pimp" when that is all they think we know anyway. Open your mind, if possible, and read between the lines. Let go of that ignorance and know that there is always an alterior motive. WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous

No hon-you need to wake up and live in reality. You seem to be the one that is ignorant because you've obviously never thought about why it is that when a black person does something "positive" it isn't looked at as representing the whole race, but as soon as a black person does something that's deemed "negative" then it does. These guys don't represent all black people just like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton's ideas don't represent all black people so like I said-let go of the slave mentality and stop worrying about what some white person's stereotype is of you. You are so hot and bothered about how this performance is going to make us "look" but they don't worry about pleasing you or how anything they do is going to "look" to blacks--so you need to quit putting down other people that think, act, create, etc. differently than what you think is appropriate for making the case that we're "civilized" in front of white folk. You are the one that needs to open your mind and think about what it is about them that's REALLY bothering you-self hate is a mo fo...

Anonymous

said...

You are just the type of person that disgraces our race. I think you have more of a slave mentality than I do. My people did not get beaten and hosed down to get through the doors of Hollywood to display these horrid acts. I am not trying to convince you to change your mind, I am just speaking mine, and I am sure the majority of our "respectable" figures would agree. There is enough of a negative image of us, not just with the "white" community, all over the world. If we want to be respected as a race, we need to take the necessary steps to do so. Every time we think we are taking a step forward, we take ten back. Other races would never come to the B.E.T Awards and sing "Its hard out there for a Meth Dealer". Wake Up My Black People.

Anonymous

said...

^Actually, you're the type of person that disgraces our race because you still want us to be what someone else deems as acceptable behavior. How sad is it that a song could actually make a whole race take ten steps back? THAT'S the kind of thing you need to be fighting--the bigger picture. How can one song do that? Does a Jessica Simpson song represent the entire white race? As far as black people being hated or having a negative image all over the world--I've traveled extensively and lived on three continents and trust me when I tell you that it's white people that have the "negative" image all over the world because they're always trying to make everyone act and think exactly the way they do and anyone that doesn't is considered to be "under" them and I'm sure the "respectable" figures you speak of would most definitely agree with that too.

^AMEN! I was in the Army and white people are seen as the enemy by foreigners. Japanese, Koreans, Africans, Middle Eastern all hate white people because they come to their country and try to tell them how things should be instead of letting their own culture dictate.

I doubt it. Jessica Simpson is an airhead and unfortunately that is praised in America because it made her a star, and at the same time SNL and many other white figures downed her as well. I should not be compelled to pat someone on the back because they can perform a song about being a pimp and that is as far as their minds can travel. I can't use another one of their songs to try to give examples of what they are capable of because all of their music is crap. So, are you telling me that reality is we are all pimps, hoes and criminals that can't pay our rent. I have also traveled and lived abroad and worked very hard to share positive images of my people where negativity was all that people were exposed to. Just like when I was volunteering in Nigeria. I did not know how beautiful that country was, I just thought it was dirt roads and pot belly children with flies on their faces. AFRICANS don't even respect us a people. It is a tragedy and all of those before us worked in vain.

I don't have a problem with people expressing their opinion about 3-6 Mafia--everyone is entitled to it and I've never even heard this song in it's entirety so it's not like I'm a fan. My problem is that it seems everyone's main issue is/was how it makes black people look. Staying with the Jessica Simpson example--you're correct regarding the spoofs, etc. but no one was complaining that she reflected badly on her race. Of course we have MORE reality than being pimps, hoes and criminals that can't pay our rent BUT it is a reality none-the-less and there are plenty of white folks who live that reality too and there have been plenty of movies that white people have made about it too. Jane Fonda won an Oscar for playing a prostitute and so did Elizabeth Taylor but white people weren't walking around like "oh, we have so much more to offer than that-it's reflecting badly on our race." My issue is that people need to realize that no matter how positive your outlook, no matter how many suits and ties you have, no matter how educated you are you will still not be recognized by white people as their equal. Colin Powell is still not equal, Condoleeza Rice is still not equal, Oprah Winfrey is still not equal and the list goes on. Funny how these so-called "positive" images are not seen as reflecting the whole race but an act like 3-6 Mafia does. Most of us don't live like Oprah but most of us don't live like 3-6 Mafia either. Do you see what I'm getting at? I'm not saying that means let everything go to hell in a hand-basket and not try to achieve YOUR personal best--but what I am saying is that the desire to please and conform has got to stop because we will NEVER be equal. As for Africans not respecting us as a people--I have met some that felt that way but when I asked them it certainly didn't have anything to do with rap, pimps or ghettos but because we're not "pure" blood Africans because we let white people make us slaves(direct quote).

Anonymous

said...

^I also want to clarify that when I say never be equal--I mean that we will never be equal in their eyes.

Anonymous

said...

We let white people make us slaves, we are lazy, we are ignorant and uneducated. I have lived with and gone to college with them and I am telling you first hand what they think of us. Look at Kate Moss, she got caught using cocaine and got more endorsements than she had previously. The crimes the commit are forgotten where as we are not allowed to live down our faults in this white ruled world, so why give them more amo? Our good deeds are overshadowed by the negative things we do. And all I am saying is don't be so easy to give them validity that their assumptions are accurate.

Anonymous

said...

And can you all end this please?

Anonymous

said...

^I totally understand what you are saying-trust me. But as I stated before, the very fact that a song and a performance can somehow give validity to their assumptions about an entire race is the real problem, not the song itself.

It's a huge problem, but it is a harsh reality. Thank you for being so open minded and debating with me. It made my work day go by faster. I barely got any work done, girl. Oprah did not have anything negative to say, so I guess we can sleep peacefully now. SHE HAS SPOKEN!!
