Random Thought...

Yesterday on VH1 Soul they were playing a lot of videos from back in the day. Brandy's video for her song "Baby" came on and that made me think about how times have changed. I noticed how the lil pop R&B music was so innocent back then. Don't get me wrong, I like the new breed of girlie teenage pop R&B singers but they are so grown compared to what Brandy was singing about back then. I use Brandy as a reference because she was basically the first black "it" girl for my generation (she came out in '94). Back then Brandy was singing about best friends and thinking about her baby. Now-a-days the girls are singing about their "goodies" and looking for boys to make them "feel good". Even in Brandy's videos back in the day she could rock a turtle neck, a big coat, and still be cool. Now-a-days if you are wearing a big coat there must be a bra top on under it. Like I said before, I like the music that's out now, but boy have times changed...

Naw, for real. My best friend and I talk about that shit all the time. The times have changed because the industry has built these false images. Brandy was it for us. We all new someone who looked like her, acted liker, hell maybe even sung like her. Naw all of this shit is preheated like hot pockets. She was relateable, but normal, and she still had innocence and star power.

Basically if you are not a light skin stripper who can barely hold a tune you will never be a megastar. I blame the artist who keeping pushing the envelope. They have no vision and no sense of responsibility. However, we do have, A keys, India, J scott etc., so it is not all bad. I do think Aaliyah struck a good balance, she was sexy and comercial without taking it to the hostreme.

J-Mami, tell it to the mountain!! I couldn't agree with you more. Brandy represented almost every girl back then. Monica and Aaliyah as well. They were all down to earth and talented girls. I miss those times because the music was so authentic! People weren't shoving that diva/booty/lightskinned only mentality on the masses. They represented variety and that is what we need. Not everybody in a race to be the best blonde, bootylicious, tripple threat. that stuff is so fake to me.

I agree. That's one of the reasons I loved Brandy (and still do) as an artist. I could see myself in her. She was a real girl. People tried to put her down about her unconventional looks but to me that goes back to people thinking that ethnic looking women are less entitled to fame and the spotlight.

I agree. I remember all of the pictures you have up of her...I wanted those tye dyes. They are still kinda cute too.

I agree. I never watched Moesha before but my daughter is into the re-runs. I was watching with her the other day thinking how entertaining Brandy was back in the day and how different these girls out now are.

All of Brandy's albums are classic albums. People forget about talent and what really counts. I can't stand watching video shows anymore. it's like you see the same female artist 20 times. The ones that ARE putting out good music get no play,

You aint told no lies about music changing. These were the innocent yet real days of R&B now it's like everyone is after the almight dollar and they think that in order to gain money they have to lose their clothes/respect. Brandy/Monica/Aaliyah was it for me back in the days....

i agree. too much sex too soon. girls without proper understanding of the way the media works, and without the proper values being instilled in them early on. look at bobbi christina! let's turn the pendulum back girls!!

i think when people try to go the innocent route now everyone dismisses them as corny. Society is way over-sexed now anyway.

Desmon I agree. I don't really listen to the entire album of these chics nowadays. Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah put out classic music, period. I still love Brandy's muzic. Her last album was so damn good, but nobody cared because everyone is preoccupied with the wrong thing.

Sex of course is very exploited its not just music that has changed but society.

Tell me why at any other brandy posts, everyone comments on her looks and how bad her weaves look and how ugly she looks. Music is the way it is today especially in the rnb genre because every new generation of youngsters to come up listen to the so called bubble gum rnb artists you see on tv today.

Aaaahhhh memories. In the early 90's I was a teen and I think we were the last generation to have a taste of good quality black
music. Brandy, Mariah, Whitney, Boys to Men, Jodeci, Tupac, Monica, Fugees, etc.
It was about the music back then now it is about who is the most xrated.
Thank God I am not a teen now....totally different world

What artist/group/video do you think FIRST pushed the envelope of being over sexualized that started this trend? About what year?

Anonymous

does anybody remember B Angie B? and if u do what happened to her??

Not to sound racist, but I think the white girls started the trend of being too sexy at a younger age. Britney was also starting to be hot around the later years when Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah ruled.

She was more sexier and the media accepted her, so you know some of our blacks followed the trend of white america. I think that's where it started.

yah I think Britney started the too sexy too young trend and then it went overboard

I think girls was tryna keep up with the Jones'...Kimberly Jones that is...i think it was the Lil Kim and Foxy Brown era that kinda started it. Then Mariah got divorced and went hoochie on us, yeah Britney had a lot to do with it too. Then it just became acceptable for females to show tummys and breasts, then the era of VIDEO hoes came around with rappers pourin champagne over girls instead of them chillin in the pool looking cute in a bathing suit.
I remember when Mama Sonja wouldn't let Brandy show her belly then that episode of Moesha came on when she got that tattoo and her pops called her a "tramp" so I guess since then brandy been tryna keep up.

Those pics are adorable and age-appropriate. It's really sad to see the evolution of black music associated with youths.

Ciara is not a virgin, I am not saying she a hoe, but I just don't believe she is pure. I don't think she sell sex really, her dances are a little provocative though.

Girl, you took me way back! It seems like teenage popstars --like Rihana-- are not the same as back-in-the day Brandy. Brandy was an innocent, fun-loving cutie who just wanted to "be down" with her crush. Now, young popstars are trying to be grown. They don't take their time to grow like Aaliyah(RIP) did. Everyone is trying to emulate that top superstar right now. Everyone wants to look, dance, and sing like Miss Beyonce. What I am saying is, there is not enough originality. But I think R & B is not the same period. There was an element of mystery like Rick James -- "Mary Jane" (where you had to filter out the innuendo to realize he was referencing to weed)and suspense like Shirley Murdock -- "As We Lay" to it. Now, people are talking about booty, booty, booty all the time!! It is all good at the parties, but come on, there is more to life than booty!
